Cole Palmer has officially broken Eden Hazard’s Chelsea record for the most goals and assists in a single Premier League season.

Palmer scored the opening goal for the Blues in their penultimate Premier League game of the 2023-24 season against Brighton at the Amex on Wednesday night.

It means Palmer now has conjured up 32 goal involvements across 33 top-flight games for Chelsea in what has been an incredible season for the 22-year-old.

Palmer left Manchester City and arrived at Stamford Bridge in the last summer transfer window in a deal worth £42.5m

That move raised eyebrows at the time given his lack of experience but Palmer is now regarded as one of the best signings of the season.

City boss Pep Guardiola desperately tried to convince Palmer to remain at the Etihad but his heart was set on a move to Chelsea for more regular playing time.

‘He was asking for two seasons to leave and I said, ‘No! Stay! Stay!’ – but he said, ‘No – I want to leave’ – what could we do?’ Guardiola said last month.

‘I said in pre-season, stay. He said he wanted to leave. What could we do? I said stay because Riyad [Mahrez] is gone but for two seasons he wanted to leave.

‘Playing that level [he is now] is exceptional. He’s an exceptional player. I didn’t give the minutes that maybe he deserved and now he has at Chelsea.

‘I understand completely. He’s a shy guy with a lot of potential. It is what it is. He’s playing fantastic so what can I say, the decision has been made for many reasons.’

Breaking Hazard’s record is a huge achievement for Palmer given the Belgian’s status as a legendary player at the club.

Hazard produced 110 goals and 85 assists across 352 games for Chelsea between 2012 and 2019.

He helped Chelsea clinch two Premier League titles and two Europa League titles while he also won the FA Cup and League Cup with the west Londoners.
