90s rock band reunion revealed in new film after ‘barely communicating the last 10 years’

Music charts in the 90s were dominated by Britpop bands, with Blur battling against Oasis for the crown.

Three decades later and Blur has reunited amid the huge nostalgia wave while the Gallagher brothers remain very publicly at odds.

However, in a new documentary on the Parklife hitmakers the quartet confess they haven’t actually spoken to each other much for the last 10 years.

Damon Albarn, Dave Rowntree, Graham Coxon, and Alex James first formed in 1988 and by the mid 90s had enjoyed a string of hits.

As with many epic artists, eventually the band went their separate ways with frontman Damon forming animated group the Gorillaz.

He continued: ‘I mean even when we really split up, it didn’t take this long to make a record, but what’s wonderful is as soon as the four of us get in a room together, it’s just exactly the same as it was when we were all 19….’

The feature-length film depicts the most recent chapter in the band’s story, as they reunited to record their first album in eight years.

Blur’s surprise drop The Ballad of Darren went straight to number one as fans celebrated the return.

‘With each other… In the nineties, it was a very intense time,’ Graham continued. ‘On the same sort of level as a relationship, or marriages and things like that.

‘I think it’s okay to say that time apart was taken up with other friendships and just sort of recuperating or doing other things.’

The band never truly fell out — unlike their rival duo — and reconnected over the years for tours and new releases.

2015 saw the group release The Magic Whip after 12 years of hiatus before going underground again until 2022.

Dave shared: ‘The fact that we haven’t always got on, that is one of the chemistry points that has led to us being able to make the music we do. I’m absolutely convinced of it.’

Damon added: ‘I don’t think any of us thought we’d make another record, especially not a record like this. I suppose that’s why I wanted to try and make it as good as possible.’

Later in the film he continued: ‘We all have hugely involving and complicated lives and we’re so lucky that we get to spend this time together, just the four of us. And that’s the beauty of it…’
