The Red Devils have been courting two centre-back options with Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Everton youngster Jarrad Branthwaite listed as options, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that Todibo’s improved form in Ligue 1 has caught the eye of United.
It also suggests that Branthwaite impressed club scouts while out on loan at Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven last season.
United have already lost young defender Di’Shon Bernard on a free transfer to Sheffield Wednesday following his release.
The club could also lose former captain Harry Maguire with West Ham already having one bid rejected.
Should the England international leave Old Trafford, United’s centre-back options would start to look scarce.

Ten Hag would be left with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof as first-team regulars.
The squad currently have Eric Bailly and Jonny Evans on the books but they are not expected to have roles once the season starts.
Bailly spent last season out on loan at French outfit Marseille while Evans has only signed a short-term contract to maintain his fitness during pre-season.
However, Ten Hag has been impressed with Evans’ leadership qualities for the younger players.
During pre-season, he said: “I think he helped us, as you said, [with] younger players, but also for numbers here.
“Not all the internationals were in and we had to manage the load from the players so that was really useful.
“Jonny wants to stay fit, he still wants a career. I think he pushes the younger players to a higher level and that can be really helpful.
“So I’m happy we bring him in. I’m happy he wants to do that and I think we help him as well.”
