Cesc Fabregas says the poor form of three ‘top’ Manchester United stars proves ‘something is wrong’ at Old Trafford.
United slumped to their lowest-ever Premier League finish last season and only qualified for Europe thanks to their unlikely FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
Fabregas insists the Red Devils will ‘come back’ one day and challenge for major trophies once more but says it should worry the club that three ‘top’ players have struggled.
Jadon Sancho endured two-and-a-half difficult years at Old Trafford before being frozen out by Erik ten Hag and returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan during the January transfer window.
Given his struggles at United, it was a surprise to see Sancho rediscover his form so quickly at Dortmund and help the Bundesliga side reach Saturday’s Champions League final, where they face Real Madrid.
Casemiro won that competition five times at the Bernabeu but has also underperformed this season, with ex-Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher declaring last month that he was finished at the top level and should move to Saudi Arabia or the MLS.
Fabregas is also surprised to see Sofyan Amrabat, one of the stars of the last World Cup, underwhelm since joining United on loan from Fiorentina last summer.

‘Manchester United will come back because they are a big team but look at Jadon Sancho,’ Fabregas said on the BBC’s Planet Premier League podcast.
‘He’s not doing well at United, he goes to Dortmund and he looks again like the player we all thought he was going to be.
‘Look at the midfielder that impressed for Morocco at the World Cup [Amrabat], he was fantastic. And then he goes to Man United and he’s not been the same player.

‘Casemiro won Champions League after Champions League at Real Madrid, he was the best defensive midfielder in the world and then he goes to Manchester United and looks like a completely different player.
‘Obviously it makes me think that something is wrong there. It’s not a coincidence that three top, top players come in and they are not good all of a sudden.’
Manchester United are currently deciding whether to sack Ten Hag despite the FA Cup win. Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel are some of the names being linked with the job.
