The Chairman, Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, Osun State chapter, Dr Tunde Afolabi has called for an improved healthcare system in the state and the country at large.
He made the call in his address during an event to commemorate World Family Doctors Day, themed, “Healthy Planet, Healthy People.”
Afolabi acknowledged the significant strides made in improving healthcare outcomes in Osun State, attributing much of the success to the dedicated work of family physicians.
He, however, recognised ongoing challenges and the need for continued collaboration to address them.
“Let us continue to work together to improve healthcare outcomes in Osun State and beyond. As family physicians, we are the backbone of our healthcare system, providing primary care to our communities and playing a vital role in preventing and managing diseases,” the chairman added.
Afolabi underscored the importance of promoting health equity and addressing social determinants of health.
The family physician outlined the multifaceted roles his colleagues play across different levels of healthcare.
He stated, “At the primary care level, we serve as the first point of contact for patients, providing preventive care, diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses, and referring patients to specialists when necessary.
“In secondary care, we work in hospitals and clinics, providing specialised care, managing complex medical conditions, performing procedures, and coordinating patient care with other healthcare professionals.
“At the tertiary level, we provide highly specialised care, conduct research, and teach medical students and residents.”
Afolabi reminded those at the event about the contributions family physicians make towards a healthy planet and healthy people, which he listed to include promoting sustainable healthcare practices, reducing waste, educating patients on environmental health, and advocating for policies addressing climate change and health equity.
He added, “By fulfilling these roles, family physicians play a vital part in achieving a healthy planet and healthy people.”
