Video footage captures the moment hundreds of tourists were left clinging on a rock face for up to two hours.
The people were left stranded after the line suddenly stopped in Zhejiang Province, China.
A man sent a worried message to his wife alongside a video that showed the dangerous pile up.
It is not clear how high up the people were but the mountain is 3,773ft high.
The back up was caused by too many people climbing on the same route, according to managers at the Yandang Mountain rock climbing attraction.
The May Day holiday takes place in China from May 1 to May 5 and this is why there were an unusually high number of tourists at the climbing site.
Officials sorted the queue by restricting the amount of people who were allowed to join.
They said anyone who wanted to escape the pile up could abseil down with a professional, but this came at a cost so many decided to stay put.

The officials explained that the charge is applied because many people don’t complete the track and ask to abseil down ‘because it was fun’.
The bottleneck was finally cleared after about two hours.
Attraction managers Wenzhou Dingcheng Sports Development Co., Ltd said in a statement: ‘Due to our misjudgment of how many customers would come, the lack of effective traffic controls such as a ticket reservation system, and shortcomings in onsite management, customers were blocked and trapped on the climbing route.’
Tickets have temporarily been suspended while the company deal with the matter internally.
A traffic-control system for visitors will soon be implement, it confirmed.
People were quick to respond to the video which was posted on social media.
