An amusement park ride suddenly halted mid air and left tourists hanging upside down.

Footage shows a Gian Swing ride suspended at its highest point in Chongqing, southern China on Saturday.

To make matters worse the top part of the swing continued to rotate, prompting continuous screams from the scene.

Witnesses can be heard shouting: ‘It’s definitely a malfunction; they’ve been hanging up there for two minutes!’

The equipment started working again around two minutes later, safely returning the tourists to the ground without any injuries.

Ride operators said the swing reaching a balanced state upon reaching its peak led to the terrifying moment.
