OJ Simpson told fans he was ‘just about over’ his health issues in a video posted to social media just weeks before the ex-American football star died from cancer.

The 76-year-old filmed the video while sitting beside a swimming pool and wearing a San Francisco 49ers shirt.

He said: ‘Let me take a moment to thank all the people who reached out to me – my health is good.

‘Obviously I’m dealing with some issues but hey, I think I’m just about over it, and I’ll be back on that golf course hopefully in a couple of weeks.

‘But it was very nice hearing from you and hearing those good, positive words. Thank you.’

The video was filmed to mark Super Bowl LVIII, which was played on February 11 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the 49ers.

Mr Simpson said he was backing the 49ers – the team he played for in the final years before his retirement in 1979 – to win the biggest trophy in American football.

He predicted they would be victorious 24 points to 20, but the Chiefs ultimately beat them 25 to 22.

The video was the final tweet posted to his X account before his family used the platform to announce his death earlier today.

Their post said: ‘On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer.

‘He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

‘During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.’

He was previously said to be undergoing chemotherapy to treat prostate cancer.
