Morrisons has recalled a type of cheese from its stores after it was found to be contaminated with listeria bacteria.
The supermarket put out the notice for The Best Taleggio after tests found the potentially deadly bug.
Listeria typically causes symptoms similar to flu, but in more severe cases, the infection can lead to serious complications including meningitis.
Pregnant woman, babies less than one month old, and people older than 65 are among those most vulnerable to the bacteria.
In its alert post, the Food Standards Authority said: ‘If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it.
‘Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.’
Tesco was previously forced to recall its own taleggio cheese in 2021 over concerns about listeria.
Studies have suggested that the process for making the cheese, which involves regular washing with brine, may leave it at particular risk of contamination.
What is Listeria monocytogenes?
Listeria monocytogenes is the name given to the bacteria which causes listeriosis in humans.
While it’s much less common than other bacteria typically found on food such as E. coli or salmonella, it can be far more lethal.
Healthy adults tend to only experience mild infection, which may lead to high temperatures, muscle ache or pain, chills, vomiting and diarrhoea.
But to pregnant women, the elderly and people with weaker immune systems it can be very dangerous.
A major outbreak of listeriosis in northern Italy between 2009 and 2011 was linked to soft cheese.
