A mum has shared her shock of learning baby killer Lucy Letby had cared for her child just a day before she was removed from the neonatal unit.

Letby, who was convicted of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others in August last year, is serving 14 life sentences.

Each of the offences took place in the neonatal unit where she worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire between June 2015 and June 2016.

Ahead of an appeal for her convictions in April, mother Nicola Tarran, 39, from Flintshire, told the BBC she was shocked to learn Letby cared for her child.

She contacted police after seeing Letby’s name on medical records, though there was no evidence her baby daughter Emily had been harmed by the serial killer.

Emily had been born prematurely and was admitted to the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester hospital on June 16.

Her mum said though she’s now an ‘absolutely beautiful’ little girl, she suffers from lung problems and ‘severe sleep apnea’, which she worries could have been caused by Letby.

Ms Tarran recalled learning of Letby’s involvement in her daughter’s treatment: ‘My heart came out of my mouth. I felt physically sick thinking my daughter was in her [Letby’s] hands.’

No one involved in Letby’s investigation contacted Ms Tarran, she said: ‘I think parents should have been informed. It’s always been in the back of our minds, “What if?”

‘Finding out all these years later that our child was investigated and we didn’t have a clue.’

Cheshire Constabulary is continuing to review all units where Letby worked, and said in a statement to BBC: ‘During the course of the review if anything of concern medically is identified then the relevant family would be contacted by the investigation team as part of the process.’

The Countess of Chester hospital has been contacted for a statement.

On April 25, Letby’s case will be heard by a panel of judges at a public hearing as she appeals her multiple convictions.

The appeal was initially turned down by a judge, but she is now entitled to a full court hearing to argue right to appeal.
