Iconic 90s band reunite in studio for the first time in nearly a decade

After eight years away, Jamiroquai are finally back in the studio preparing a new album and can’t help but tease their long-awaited return.

The British funk group tragically lost their bassist Derek McIntyre just last month after he died in a car crash aged 66.

Frontman Jay Kay paid tribute to his bandmate and it was unknown if the group would return given the hiatus after 2017’s Automaton, for which the tour sold out in minutes.

However, the 54-year-old singer headed into the studio for a writing session and it sparked a reunion of the Deeper Underground hitmakers.

‘It’s been a long time coming but the time feels right for Jamiroquai to work on new music,’ a source told The Sun’s Bizarre column.

In a clip shared to TikTok, Jay looked thrilled to be back and gave a little glimpse around the studio with drummer Derrick McKenzie walking into the room.

The source continued: ‘Jay went into the studio for a writing session recently and it went really well. They got the band involved too and it all felt very special to be back together doing what they do best.

‘Everyone involved is excited about the new project and what it will sound like. It’s early days and while they don’t know when the new record will be out, the wheels are in motion.’

Jamiroquai was originally formed in 1992, although Jay is the only founding member still involved and carries much of the social media presence.

‘Getting the groove on again!’ he captioned the TikTok, with a slew of excited fans claiming this was a sign it’s a ‘good year’.

Many asked they return to the Space Cowboy era stylistically, referring to the group’s 1994 album which peaked at number two in the UK charts.

‘New Jamiroquai album means it’s a good year,’ commented Damon Blatt, while fellow fan Momo Quilling added: ‘Please make songs like the 90’s ones again.’

The band was nominated for countless awards, including winning the Grammy for Best Performance by a Duo Or Group for Virtual Insanity in 1998.

A year later Jamiroquai won the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection and their greatest hits album High Times: Singles 1992-2006 went triple platinum in the UK alone.

The Cosmic Girl singers reportedly took the loss of their bandmate McIntyre ‘hard’ and continue to honour his memory.

The source added: ‘It’s a reminder that life is short. His passion for music was inspiring and everyone in Jamiroquai had Derrick in mind.’
