Shamima Begum suffers blow in last-ditch bid to get her British citizenship back

Begum wants the Supreme Court to restore her British citizenship

Shamima Begum’s bid to take her citizenship battle to the Supreme Court has suffered a setback in its early stages.

The former ‘Isis bride’ asked the Court of Appeal for approval to challenge the government’s decision at the UK’s highest court, but was refused on Monday.

She can still send a direct request to the Supreme Court to hear her request, which will be likely be her final chance to overturn the 2019 decision to remove her citizenship.

Judges denied Begum’s last challenge, which was heard in February before the Court of Appeal – the second-highest court in England and Wales.
