Chelsea star Cole Palmer was announced in the England on Thursday and Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has outlined four reasons for his inclusion.

Palmer arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer from Manchester City in a deal worth £42.5m and has easily been the Blues’ best player in the 2023-24 campaign.

The 21-year-old has provided 11 goals and eight assists across 24 Premier League games this term and has received plenty of praise from various pundits.

Palmer has been capped twice by England to date but could be set to make his third appearance as the Three Lions face Brazil and Belgium later this month.

Southgate admits that Palmer’s impressive form is one of four reasons for his inclusion while he also referenced his versality and hard work in training.

The fourth thing Palmer has done to impress Southgate is showcasing his ability to step up in high-pressured moments.

That’s one thing England will need in the latter stages of Euro 2024 if they are to improve on their runner-up finish at Euro 2020 and secure the trophy in Germany.

‘You can see and have always been able to see the quality he has,’ Southgate said about Palmer on Thursday.

‘The time we spent with the U21s last summer just watching the training sessions you could see what an outstanding technical finisher he was.

‘Some players get chances and you expect them to score because their technique and feel for finishing is so strong, he has that. He’s shown great composure in some real pressure moments for his club.

‘He’s adaptable. He can play two or three different positions, maybe more. He’s had an outstanding season and yet again is in on merit.’
