A man was found with his penis severed in a home in northwest Germany – and police believe his ‘Jack Russell terrier-sized dog’ might be the culprit.
Neighbours phoned the police in Herne, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the early hours of Tuesday.
When officers arrived at the single-family home on Magdeburger Straße at around 2am, they heard painful groaning inside.
Bursting through the door, the officers found the homeowner, 66, in critical condition and took him to hospital, state public broadcaster WDR reported.
The ‘instrument of the crime’ – the man’s genitals – have yet to be recovered from the scene, a chief inspector from the nearby Bochum police force told the German tabloid BILD.
Frank Lemanis, 59, said that as the man had been put into an artificial coma by doctors, what exactly happened that night remains unclear.

‘We hope we can interview him soon,’ Lemanis said.
‘One hypothesis, of course, is that the dog, which is about the size of a Jack Russell terrier, bit off the penis and ate it. The wound could also be a bite wound.
‘But it’s also possible a sex accident or a crime.’
BILD said it understands the man’s wife was not in the house at the time.
Charges of grievous bodily harm are being considered and police are appealing for witnesses.
