A head-on crash between two buses has killed 17 people and injured 14 more in Honduras.
The crash happened in the village of La Montanita on Wednesday morning between a regular public service bus and a private service.
Alexia Mejia, a spokeswoman for the 911 emergency system in western Honduras, said: ‘All the injured and deceased were travelling in the small bus and are Hondurans. The large bus was empty.’
Of the 14 injured people, four of them suffered severe wounds and were airlifted to a hospital in San Pedro Sula. The others were taken to Western Regional Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said two of the injured people had died, including a minor, and pictures from the scene show a row of bodies, covered in sheeting, laid out on the road in front of the wrecked vehicles.
Witnesses say both buses were travelling at ‘moderate speed’ on a curvy, mountainous road when the crash happened.

The larger bus was carrying only its driver and one passenger, as they returned from the Agua Caliente customs post on the border with Guatemala having dropped off a group of migrants.
The smaller bus was full of passengers.
Thousands of migrants cross through Honduras every year from South America heading towards the United States.

Xiomara Castro, president of the Central American country, said she had learned of the crash ‘with deep consternation and pain’ and sent condolences to the families of the victims.
Road accidents are the second most common cause of death in Honduras, after murders.
