Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta provided an injury update on Takehiro Tomiyasu following Arsenal’s 6-0 victory at West Ham on Sunday.
The defender has been unavailable for the last month after representing Japan at the Asia Cup and was expected to return for the clash at the London Stadium.
Tomiyasu was omitted from the squad, though, with Arteta revealing after the match that the 25-year-old is struggling with a ‘niggle’.
Quizzed as to why Tomiyasu was not present, Arteta said: ‘He had a niggle with the national team.
‘It was not the moment to risk him after how many minutes he has played.’
With Oleksandr Zinchenko ruled out, many thought Arteta would start Tomiyasu at left-back but he opted to pick Jakub Kiwior instead.
Kiwior helped the Gunners register a clean sheet in a historic result as the north Londoners recorded their joint-largest ever away league win.

The match also saw Bukayo Saka register his 50th goal for Arsenal and the English winger felt his side could’ve scored ‘many more’ goals in east London.
‘We were 4-0 up in the first half and we could have scored many more – including myself,’ Saka told Sky Sports. ‘We smelt blood today and we went for the kill.
‘I am really happy to achieve that (record). I missed some chances that I could have scored but it is a great achievement and I am proud of that.’
