Manchester United are ‘very interested’ in signing Everton star Amadou Onana and will consider bidding for the midfielder in the January transfer window.

The Belgian joined the Toffees from Lille in a £33m deal 18 months ago and he’s settled well in the Premier League.

The combative midfielder is precisely the type of presence that United are lacking in midfield and Erik ten Hag’s side have suffered this term after injury to Casemiro.

The Brazilian has been put up for sale, with United hoping to get a big money offer from Saudi Arabia.

Ten Hag is instead looking to the future and Onana, 22, has his best years ahead of him.

According to Foot Mercato, United are ‘very interested’ in the midfielder and would be comfortable with meeting Everton’s £47.5m asking price.

However, it’s Barcelona that lead the race and the Spaniards have already held talks with the Toffees over Onana’s signature.

The Catalans are desperate to sign a midfielder following injury to Gavi, who is set to be out for the next eight months.

Barcelona would favour a loan deal with an obligation to buy, but Everton are unlikely to accept such an offer.

That’s despite the Toffees being in a dire financial situation and they were recently handed a 10-point reduction after breaking Premier League financial fair play rules.
