A British GP has beaten off some short back and sided competition to take the crown of ‘mullet of the year’ and has revealed what he is going to do with it next.
The fittingly named Dr Alistair Bush, from Bovington, Dorset, has vowed to spark a new rivalry between England and Australia, reminiscent of how the Ashes began.
The British Army GP first won an international heat at Mulletfest in New South Wales in February – and won the full contest this weekend in Kurri Kurri.
He said: ‘This is widely considered to be the Everest of the competitive mullet growing world.’
Speaking before the competition, he said if he won, he would shave off his mullet, burn it, and give it to Australia in an Ashes-style urn to spark a new rivalry.
Dr Bush added: ‘It’s like the Ashes in reverse. You guys came out and beat us, and there was such rancour from us in 1882 that these guys could come from the other side of the world and beat us at cricket. We burnt the bails.

‘If I win this thing, I will burn my mullet and send the ashes back to them in a cup.’
Dr Bush, 45, said he’s always had a ‘short back and sides’ but began growing his impressive mane when his nephew encouraged him in 2021.
Two and a half years later, his light brown hair measures an astounding 12 inches long, with a perfect wave.
The bizarre Mulletfest was formed as a way to attract tourists to the small town about 80 miles north of Sydney, and blossomed into a worldwide attraction.
Even after winning the crown at Mulletfest, Dr Bush said he would not regrow his mullet.

He said: ‘Whatever happens, I will chop it off and return to my regular short back and sides.’
The doctor is also raising money for Testicular Cancer UK and used the contest as a way to encourage men to get checked.
He said: ‘I work as a GP for the army and many of my patients are in the at-risk age group for developing testicular cancer.
‘The soldiers are mainly in their 20s and find the mullet funny, but I would not have grown it if I had regular patients.
‘If diagnosed early it can be easily treated so raising awareness is essential.’
