Alan Shearer was enraged by the controversial late penalty given to Paris Saint-German against Newcastle on Tuesday night, allowing the home side to rescue a 1-1 draw late into stoppage time.
The Magpies took the lead 24 minutes into the contest in France through Alekander Isak and looked like they were going to hold on for a huge three points.
However, deep into injury time Ousmane Dembele attempted to poke the ball across goal but flicked it straight into Tino Livramento. The defender could do nothing from such close range as the ball hit his chest and then bounced onto his elbow, but after a VAR check the referee pointed to the spot.
Kylian Mbappe stepped up and slotted the penalty away, but few thought that he deserved the opportunity to do so.
The handball felt ridiculously harsh and Newcastle legend Shearer was certainly not impressed as he made his opinion clear on social media.
‘Do me a f**king favour man. What a load of shit. #VAR,’ Shearer posted.
‘A superb battling away performance from every single player. Shouldn’t be spoilt by a disgusting decision. Well done.’
Goalscorer Isak was diplomatic after the match, but felt that it wasn’t a penalty when he first saw the incident on the pitch.
‘Unfortunate for us to get a goal against us so late. I think we started defending our goal a bit too early. It’s never nice to concede a goal that late,’ the Swedish striker told TNT Sports.
‘My first reaction was it wasn’t [a penalty]. It seemed cheap. I haven’t seen a replay. Hopefully it was a penalty. We have to trust the referees.
‘We are very proud of the team. It’s not an easy place to come. They haven’t lost for some time here.
‘We almost got the win. It is unfortunate. We always want to win, but this point will be important. We have it all to play for.’
Newcastle must now beat AC Milan in their final group stage game and hope PSG do not beat Borussia Dortmund, a scenario which would still see Eddie Howe’s side progress.
