Everton could face the possibility of further punishments should their latest set of accounts also breach profit and sustainability rules, according to reports.

The Merseyside club are already reeling from their initial 10-point deduction for a breach of its profitability and sustainability rules in the period ending in the 2021-22 season.

The rules allow clubs to lose a maximum of £105million over three years or face sanctions, with a commission ruling Everton were £19.5m beyond that limit.

Everton have dropped into the relegation zone as a result of the punishment, although it could be about to get worse for Sean Dyche’s side.

According to a report in The Times, clubs can be punished for breaches in consecutive seasons, with Everton’s finances set to be investigated yet again for this year.

The latest accounts are due in March next year, although an earlier version needs to be submitted by the end of the year.

The latest three-year window would take into account this current year as well as the final two years that contributed to the initial ban.

The sale of academy graduate Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United will aid potential losses, but the costs of building the club’s new stadium continue to be a significant financial outlay.

Should they be found to have generated losses over the £105m limit again, the Premier League could be entitled to impose similar punishments and a potential second points deduction on the club.

Everton have strenuously denied the initial allegations, saying they have worked with the Premier League for several months on the issue and intend to appeal the ruling.

Everton may also have to deal with the potential of a lawsuit from former Premier League clubs who were relegated during Everton’s years of overspending.

According to the Mail, Leicester City, Leeds United and Burnley are all considering legal action, especially as the former two were relegated instead of Everton on the final day of last season.
