Bukayo Saka has been declared fit for Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Manchester City on Sunday.

The 22-year-old was considered a doubt for Arsenal’s match at home to the Premier League champions this weekend after he was forced off in the first half of the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Lens in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

Saka has been nursing an Achilles injury since the end of last season, while Mikel Arteta has faced accusations of over-playing the winger after he was substituted late on in the 4-0 win against Bournemouth last Saturday.

However, The Times report that a scan on Saka’s left leg have shown no sign of serious injury and the winger is now in line to face City.

‘[He’s] in contention,’ Arteta said on Friday.

‘That’s it. I’m not a doctor. That’s what they told me. Let’s see how he progresses from here to Sunday. He had to leave the pitch, that’s never good news, but let’s see how he recovers.’

Bukayo has now featured in a club-record 87 consecutive Premier League games for Arsenal.

The winger has also been named in England’s latest squad for their friendly against Australia and their Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy later this month.

‘I have spoken to Gareth [Southgate] on several occasions but I have to do my job,’ Arteta said.

‘I give him the news and the position that everybody is at, and then we have really good communication. He needs to make the best decision for the national team and organising them.’
