Egg for Sale: Reps to probe fertility clinics

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Healthcare Services to launch probe into the activities of fertility clinics in Nigeria over abuses.

This resolution followed a motion moved by Babajimi Benson (APC-Ikorodu), a lawmaker from Lagos State.

According to Benson, some desperate Nigerians sell their eggs for as low as N100,000 to fertility clinics.

He noted that some of the clinics are taking advantage of Nigerians because of the poor regulation of the sector.

Benson said “These women undergo the surgical egg retrieval, relinquishing control over the eggs obtained. They are typically remunerated between N100,000 to N150,000 per retrieval, with as many as five to six eggs potentially extracted per month.”

Following the adoption of his motion, the House gave the Committee 4weeks to investigate and present a report.
