A nine-year-old boy has died in a car crash.
The hit and run happened in Bundoran in Co Donegal on Saturday night – and was one of three fatalities in separate car crashes within a six hour period.
The boy was hit by a vehicle on Atlantic Way at around 9.20pm and despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The vehicle involved in the collision did not remain at the scene, and traffic diversions have been in place on Sunday to allow for forensics officers to investigate.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and in particular appealing to the driver of the vehicle to come forward.
The boy is from the Kildress area of Co Tyrone in the Republic of Ireland, and events scheduled in the village have been cancelled, the Irish Independent reports.
Local Independent TD Thomas Pringle said: ‘I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of the young boy Bundoran last night.
‘My thoughts are with his family and the close community in Bundoran which will be reeling at this difficult time.
‘I urge anyone with information to contact the gardaí.’
Separately, a motorcyclist in his 20s was killed and a pedestrian injured after a crash in Tallaght at around 2.45am on Sunday morning.
And in Kerry, another man in his 20s died after being hit by a taxi shortly after 2am.
