Everton have confirmed they are working with the police after an investigation was opened in relation to a reported incident of racist abuse directed at an Arsenal player.
Mikel Arteta’s side faced Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday as the Gunners picked up their first win at the ground since 2017 with a 1-0 victory courtesy of Leandro Trossard’s second-half strike.
However, it has since has since been revealed that an unnamed Arsenal player was the target of racist abuse during the first half, with Merseyside Police now investigating the incident with the help of the club.
A statement on Everton’s club website said: ‘Everton Football Club is working alongside Merseyside Police to investigate a reported incident of racist abuse directed towards an opposition player during Sunday’s Premier League match with Arsenal at Goodison Park.
‘Everton condemns all forms of discrimination and we will seek the strongest possible sanctions to tackle anti-social and or criminal behaviour, including club bans and criminal prosecution.
‘The incident took place approximately 15 minutes into the first half of Sunday’s game, in the Lower Gwladys Street stand near to the Bullens Road stand.
‘Racism has no place in our stadium or our communities.’

Mikel Arteta’s side are now preparing for Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham, having continued their fine run of form with a comprehensive 4-0 midweek win against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
They are unbeaten in the league so far this season and sit in fourth, just two points off Manchester City.

Everton remain in search of their first league victory of the season after one draw and four defeats in their first five games.
