Rasmus Hojlund says there ‘was a lot of interest’ in him before joining Manchester United this summer, but the Red Devils were always ‘first priority’ for him.
The 20-year-old arrived at Old Trafford over the summer from Atalanta in a deal worth an initial £64m, with a potential £8m to come in add-ons.
The Denmark international recovered from a back injury which he arrived in England with and made his debut against Arsenal on Sunday, coming off the bench at Emirates Stadium.
The burly striker didn’t have long to impress but certainly looked bright and will bring an imposing, physical presence to the United forward line which has been lacking in recent years.
Hojlund’s goal record before moving to Manchester was not stellar, scoring 10 goals in 34 games for Atalanta last season, but his pace, power and other attributes have certainly caught the eye and he says a number of clubs wanted to sign him before United snapped him up.
‘There was a lot of interest, but for me Manchester United has always been the first priority,’ the Dane told tipsbladet.
‘The interest and many of these rumours happen early in the period when I make my breakthrough in the national team. Since then there has been a nice dialogue, and then something happens when the window opens, where it really gets going.’
On where the interest was coming from, Hojlund remained tight-lipped, but was clearly happy to sign a deal with the Red Devils.
‘I would rather keep it to myself,’ he said of clubs interested in him. ‘But an interest arises, and then the clubs start negotiating, and I myself start talking to the club about how the contract should look.’
The forward, who has scored six times in six caps for his country, is back on international duty, with Denmark taking on San Marino and Finland in European Championship qualifying.
