Ashley Young’s son Tyler Young is hoping to make history against his dad when Peterborough United play Everton in the FA Cup tonight.

The League One side face a tricky test against their Premier League opponents at Goodison Park in the third round of the iconic tournament.

Most football fans are familiar with Everton full-back Young, 39, who played 39 times for England between 2007 and 2018.

But what about his son Tyler? Here’s everything you need to know about him – plus what he and his father have said ahead of tonight’s clash…

Who is Tyler Young?

Tyler Young is an 18-year-old midfielder who plays for Peterborough in League One – the third-tier of English football – two steps below his dad.

Joining the club in 2024, Young wears the No.38 shirt and made his debut for the Posh in October 2024, during a 2-0 EFL Trophy win over Stevenage, which remains his only senior appearance for Peterborough to date.

Young started his career at the age of nine with Arsenal and spent a decade in the Hale End academy before he was released last year.

He is yet to make his league debut for Peterborough, and if he plays against Everton in the FA Cup, it will mark his second overall appearance to date.

What have Ashley and Tyler Young said about the game?

Ashley Young, asked who his partner and the rest of the family will be cheering on, told talkSPORT: ‘Let’s put it this way… they’ve not got Everton shirts, so they’ve all gone and leaned towards Tyler’s side.

‘I even think my own parents are actually leaning towards Tyler’s side as well. So I’m just out here cheering on myself.

‘I’m just a lone wolf, that’s just me. But I get it. I understand it, but after the game they’ll be back on my side once we’ve won. So it’s all right. Anything can happen in the FA Cup, I know it’s a big thing – father against son – but on the day he’s an opponent, and I want to win.’

Tyler Young, quizzed about facing his own father, added: ‘It means a lot, to be playing against my dad, but even to play in the FA Cup, which has got so much history.

‘Just playing in the competition I’ve been watching since I was younger would mean a lot, it’ll be even better that I’ll be playing against my dad.

‘Anything can happen in the FA Cup, so if we do come out with a good win, it’ll mean even more because I would have just beaten my dad – and we’ve just won in the FA Cup.

‘Everton are a lot higher than Peterborough and my dad is also on the team. I don’t think he could live it down if I beat him… I want to do more than what my dad has done. I want to be better than him.’

Have any other fathers and sons played against each other before in the FA Cup?

No father and son have ever played against each other in 154 years of the FA Cup.

It means the Youngs would write themselves into the history books should they both feature in the Everton vs Peterborough third-round match tonight.
