Another nationwide blackout as Nigeria’s power grid collapses for 12th time in 2024

Nigerians were once again left in darkness on Wednesday following the collapse of the country’s power grid.

The grid which has suffered persistent failures this year, collapsed at approximately 2:09 p.m., according to a post in the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid.

The incident was the fourth in the last five weeks and 12th in 2024.

“The major grid setback has occurred and the restoration is to commence,” the post read.

The recurring system failures have drawn criticisms from Nigerians, who continue to endure power outages and the associated economic and social impacts.

While the cause of this latest incident has not been disclosed, authorities have assured the public that restoration efforts are underway.

However, the frequency of grid failures highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, including aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and insufficient capacity to meet the country’s energy demands.

Calls for urgent reforms in the power sector have grown louder as Nigerians express frustration over the lack of consistent electricity supply.

The government has pledged to address the issues, but progress has been slow, leaving citizens to bear the brunt of the outages.
