President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday as part of Steinmeier’s three-day state visit to Nigeria.
The visit is aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations.
President Steinmeier arrived at the State House at 11:06 a.m., where he was welcomed with full ceremonial honors. Members of the Federal Executive Council joined President Tinubu in receiving the German leader.
The ceremony featured the rendition of the German national anthem, *Deutschland über alles,* and Nigeria’s national anthem. President Steinmeier also inspected a guard of honor mounted by the Brigade of Guards, followed by a 21-gun salute.
According to a statement from the German Embassy, the visit aims to deepen Nigeria-Germany relations. During his time in Abuja, President Steinmeier is also scheduled to meet with Dr. Alieu Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.
In addition to his engagements in Abuja, Steinmeier will travel to Lagos, where he is expected to interact with business leaders, visit a start-up hub, and engage with members of Nigeria’s cultural and civil society sectors. Among his notable engagements are meetings with Dr. Nike Okundaye of the Nike Art Gallery and Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.
President Steinmeier’s visit follows recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Nigeria in October, and President Tinubu traveled to Germany in November. This marks the third high-level exchange between the countries since Tinubu’s inauguration.
“The visit underscores the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Germany and highlights Germany’s appreciation of Nigeria’s pivotal role on the international stage,” the German Embassy stated.
Steinmeier’s itinerary reflects a focus on fostering economic partnerships, cultural exchange, and regional cooperation. The ongoing dialogue between Nigeria and Germany reaffirms their commitment to addressing global challenges and strengthening ties in trade, development, and security.
