The Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on the state Agency For the Control of AIDs and Tuberculosis, Sada Durbawa, has confirmed that no fewer than 15,042 persons are currently receiving treatment for HIV in the state.

Durbawa disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in his office in Sokoto on Monday.

The governor’s aide said the state government was giving the agency tremendous support which he described as one of the major reasons behind the success being recorded in the state.

“As of today, 15,042 persons are under treatment in Sokoto presently. I can attest to the fact that up to 94 per cent of the people in Sokoto State have been screened and we are moving towards a target.

“We have testing kits across 13 of the 23 local government areas of the state while samples can also be taken from any of the primary healthcare centres in the state,” he explained.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary, SOSACAT, Kabiru Sokoto, said the state recorded zero mother-to-child transmission of HIV in the last 12 months.

Sokoto said together with the cooperation of everyone in the state, the society can achieve a HIV/AIDs free society come 2030.

“It may interest you to know that of the 162 pregnant women tested with HIV/AIDs, there is no single record of mother-to-child transmission between December 2023 and December 2024.

“The implication of this development is that Sokoto is heading towards becoming among states without new cases of HIV/AIDS in the next six years.

“We have 13 comprehensive sites in which victims of HIV can take treatment in the state and the centres spread across 13 local government areas. We also have facilities across 244 primary health care centres where citizens can have their HIV test,” he added.
