Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has told Rasmus Hojlund why he didn’t play the 4-0 win over Everton, but says he will get his chance soon.
Having scored twice and made an assist in the Europa League win over Bodo/Glimt, many expected Hojlund to start or at least play some part in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
But Amorim surprised everyone but starting the struggling Joshua Zirkzee alongside Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes in the front-line.
The decision paid off with both Zirkzee and Rashford bagging braces in a fine win over the Toffees at Old Trafford.
The pair played the full 90 minutes, with Hojlund remaining rooted to the subs bench.
Explaining why the Dutchman started ahead of the Dane, Amorim said Zirkzee’s profile of player as a false-nine was better suited for the clash against Everton.
‘I need all the players for the sequence of matches and he is one of them. I try to help my players by putting them in a good position for their characteristics.
‘Today, it would have been difficult even for Rasmus to be in a duel with the two central defenders, so we tried to put them against a profile that they are less comfortable against.
‘Josh did a very good job. Two goals is good for the confidence, but more important is the performance. He fought for every situation. It was a good day for him.’
Amorim later added that he was still tinkering with his side and that we could expect a lot more rotation moving forward, which should allow Hojlund more chances in the starting XI.
‘In the future, we will have a structure and a base that’s more clear. We start this job now and we have a lot of games.
We have a lot of players coming back from injury. We have to rotate the team but in the future you can see a more [consistent] starting XI.
It remains to be seen who will star United’s next game, away to Arsenal on Wednesday night.
