Viktor Gyokeres – a top transfer target for Manchester United and Arsenal – would ‘definitely’ be a success at Chelsea, says club icon John Obi Mikel.
Gyokeres is one of the most in demand players in the world right now thanks to his remarkable goalscoring record at Sporting Lisbon – 66 goals in 67 appearances in the last two seasons.
Chelsea and Arsenal are among the clubs who have long kept tabs on the striker, but it is United who now appear to be leading the race for his signature.
Sporting boss Ruben Amorim will become United’s new head coach and has been heavily tipped to bring Gyokeres with him to Old Trafford, especially with the Red Devils lacking a prolific goalscorer.
Fuel was added to the fire after the 26-year-old bagged a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday in Amorim’s penultimate match in charge of Sporting.
It is said the Portuguese giants would be willing to accept a £63million bid for the Sweden international, who previously spent time at Brighton, Swansea and Coventry.
Arsenal are still linked with signing a new centre-forward but Chelsea’s interest in Gyokeres may have lessened as they already have Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku on their books.
The pair have netted 16 goals between them so far this campaign, while highly-rated teenager Marc Guiu scored his first goal for the Blues in their 8-0 win over Noah in the Conference League on Thursday night.
Nevertheless, Obi Mikel would love to see Gyokeres at Stamford Bridge, saying he has all the ingredients to be a prolific player in the Premier League.
Asked on his Obi One Podcast if he thought the striker would be a success at Chelsea, the former midfielder replied: ‘Definitely. For me, he is a Premier League player, he’s a player that suits the Premier League.
‘He has every attribute to be a Premier League player, strong, big, quick, and most importantly goalscoring.
‘He can score goals and when you look at it, his goal scoring ratio is better than any striker right now in Europe, the stats are there to back it up.
‘He has been absolutely fantastic. Scoring three goals against Man City, you don’t hear that often. He has been fantastic and looks a little bit like [Erling] Haaland.’
For now, Chelsea’s current forwards will need to be at their best when they take on rivals Arsenal on Sunday in a huge Premier League clash.
