No fewer than 1,000 residents of Lagos will get the ‘Jara Ilera Eko’ health insurance policy for free, courtesy of the Biodun Coker Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.
Announcing the initiative in a statement recently, the foundation said the move was part of the efforts to improve access to quality healthcare for the vulnerable and contribute to a healthier community.
It said though the health insurance scheme is an initiative of the Lagos State government, the 1,000 beneficiaries would have their subscription paid for by the foundation.
It added that the beneficiaries would be selected from different communities in the Lagos Island area of the state who lacked access to basic health care.
Coker, who founded the foundation, was awarded as the icon of Ekosha for his support towards promoting the Ilera-Eko health scheme.
The statement said the foundation, apart from its involvement in the health insurance scheme, was also contributing to the development of Information Technology skills.
“One of its flagship initiatives is the Lagos Island Information Technology (LIIT) programme, designed to bridge the digital divide by offering comprehensive computer and IT training to children, youths, and adults.
“This programme equips participants with essential digital skills, enhancing their employment prospects and supporting entrepreneurship.
“By promoting digital literacy, the foundation empowers individuals to leverage technology for personal and professional growth, fostering innovation and economic development.
“Over 500 school children and adult learners have already received comprehensive IT training, empowering them to navigate the modern technological landscape with confidence.
“The training covers a broad range of IT topics, providing participants with the necessary tools for success in today’s digital-driven world.
“Currently, a new cohort of 90 students is actively undergoing training at the foundation’s centre, continuing its mission to foster digital literacy and competence for future generations.”
The foundation also offers leadership development programmes to promote integrity, accountability and transparency.
“In addition to IT training, the foundation offers leadership development through programmes like the ethical leadership course, which equips community leaders with the skills necessary to promote integrity, accountability, and transparency.
“Furthermore, the foundation’s security management training initiative enhances the safety of Lagos Island residents.
“Through these combined efforts, the foundation not only improves healthcare but also strengthens education, security, and economic opportunities within the community,” the statement added.
