The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria has stressed the need to empower the girl child to promote an equal and inclusive society.
SWAN is the female wing of the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
It disclosed this in a statement to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child on October 11.
October 11 is a day designated by the United Nations to recognise the rights and challenges faced by girls worldwide.
Since its inception in 2012, this day has catalysed global efforts to promote girls’ empowerment, education, and protection.
The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Girls vision for the future’.
The National Chairperson of SWAN, Hilda Ozoh, restating the commitment of the organisation to promoting the welfare of the girls and women in society, said,
“This day serves as a reminder of the importance of empowering and supporting girls to create a more inclusive and equal society.
The day also signifies a day to highlight and emphasize the importance of educating girls and ensuring equal opportunities for their development.”
She added that the society would keep to its vision to always mentor a girl child, reach out to the less-privileged girl child, and show love to a lady in need of either physical, financial or psychological attention.
According to Ozoh, the day should be used to address the discrimination and challenges faced by girls in various aspects of life and encourage the empowerment of girls by providing them with equal opportunities and a supportive environment.
“These can never be overemphasised and for us in SWAN, we ensure our calendar of activities every year includes various sessions to help improve the wellbeing of the girl child in every aspect of her life from birth till womanhood,” she stressed.
Ozoh encouraged girls globally to strive hard, with practice, to win every battle, dreaming of a world where girls were free from discrimination, and violence.
“We join the world to encourage every girl child to remain focused, aim high and be sure your dreams will be achieved,” she added.
