PDP governors back Damagum, overrule Yayari’s appointment, all suspensions

Governors under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, nullified the suspension of the party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, as well as the counter suspension of National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN.

This decision was revealed by Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed.

According to Governor Mohammed, the status quo remains regarding the leadership of the party. This announcement comes ahead of a crucial party function in Ondo State, where Mohammed will be joined by Damagum and other key stakeholders.

The Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum stated, “The crisis is over. The governors, Board of Trustees, and other organs have resolved that the NWC should revert to the status quo. They are now united.”

Also speaking, Damagum confirmed that the crisis was over, and added, “The party is united, and no member of the NWC left before.”

The nullification of Damagum’s suspension is a significant blow to Yayari Mohammed, who was named as Damagum’s replacement by a faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) members.

Yayari had claimed that the NWC appointed him to “rekindle the hope and aspirations” of party members, citing the party’s inability to function effectively due to “conflict of interests — personal or political” among some NWC leaders.

The PDP had been grappling with internal conflicts, and this latest development is seen as an attempt to stabilize the party’s leadership. With the governors’ forum backing Damagum, it remains to be seen how Yayari and his supporters would respond.
