Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his political ambitions over age and fatigue.
The former governor made the call in a programme on Channels Television, Sunday Politics.
“I am sure at this stage, with all due respect to him, he would rather want to stay away from politics of contesting elections again,” he stated.
Atiku, 77, has lost six presidential bids since 1993, with three defeats at party primaries.
Fayose suggested that the allure of the highest office would wane for an octogenarian.
“By the time Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) will finish, Atiku Abubakar will probably be 80 or 81 – so what will be the attraction?” the outspoken ex-governor added.

Despite Fayose’s concerns, Atiku remains optimistic about his chances, telling Voice of America Hausa in May, “God willing,” when asked about another shot at the country’s highest political office
“As long as God gives me strength, good health, and long life,” Atiku added, drawing inspiration from former United States President, Abraham Lincoln’s seven attempts.
Fayose also expressed concerns about PDP’s viability, noting that its structures have collapsed.
He acknowledged Labour Party’s Peter Obi as a prominent opposition voice.
“As I always say, we can defeat the APC, but when we don’t have a party, how can we defeat them?” he stated
The PDP’s internal crisis has raised questions about its ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“When the Publicity Secretary is suspending people and vice-versa, so where is the party?” Fayose asked, highlighting the need for unity and effective leadership.
