United boss Ten Hag has been reluctant to use McTominay so far this term.

The 26-year-old has played just two minutes in his side’s opening two Premier League games.

And Ten Hag is trying to find a buyer for the £40million-rated Scotland star.

Neville told Sky Sports: “What is clear is that Ten Hag doesn’t want to revert back to Scott McTominay.

“With [Bruno] Fernandes on the right, the midfield looks all over the place and the front three doesn’t look capable of functioning as one.

“Does he go back to McTominay?

“Ten Hag has made five substitutions and not used him.

“It’s almost as if he is managing him out of the club.”

Sky Sports pundit Keane agrees McTominay’s time at the club has passed – insisting United won’t challenge for titles with him in the side.

Keane said: “People talk about Fred and McTominay in midfield, they’ve had their chance, we’ve seen them.

“[Donny] van de Beek has come into the club, and there’s nothing wrong with biding your time.

“But if you think Fred, McTominay and [Nemanja] Matic in midfield will get Man United back to the heights of winning titles.

“Then you’re living in cuckoo land.”

Luckily for Keane, Fred and Matic have departed the Red Devils’ midfield.

West Ham were interested in McTominay, but have since bought Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse instead.

And United need to sell more players to fund future transfers.

Neville continued: “What’s clear is that Manchester United‘s midfield needs bolstering.
