A non-governmental organisation, Aiding the Blind Foundation, has donated educational tools to support the education of visually impaired primary and secondary school students at the Special School for the Blind in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Presenting the items at the school on Friday, the founder of the NGO, Ademola Adeleke, stated some of the challenges confronting visually impaired people in the country.
Adeleke said, “I enrolled in the Special School for the Bline in 2012 and during my time there I noticed that many of the students were from very humble backgrounds, so I always had it in my mind to give back to the school. Now I work with a sight loss charity in England, Bradbury Fields and they cater to the rehabilitation needs of visually impaired people.
“I founded this NGO last year, Aiding the Blind Foundation and with the support of my boss in the UK who gave me some items to be donated to the school, I came to Nigeria and donated 38 mobility canes, magnifiers (some with vision challenges), typing sheets, carbon sheets and braille papers.
“I once had a near-death experience where I was dropped in the middle of a road by a taxi driver in Ibadan and that was a lesson for me because if I had had a mobility cane with me, people would have known that I was blind and needed help, and that was one of the things that motivated this gesture.”
