APC sweeps all 23 councils in Benue LG election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 23 local government areas in Benue State in the local council elections conducted on Saturday by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).

Chairman of BSIEC, Richard Tombowua who announced the results in Makurdi on Sunday, confirmed the landslide victory of the APC which also won 276 councillorship seats.

“The APC won all 23 local government chairmanship positions and all 276 councillorship positions in the election,” Tombowua said while announcing the results.

“Eight political parties had initially indicated interest in fielding candidates, but only five, APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), participated in the election,” he added.

Tombowua however, said though the elections were free, fair, and credible as there were no incidents of violence or ballot box snatching, there was a slight hiccup in Otukpo Local Government Area where a BSIEC official was briefly held hostage.

“Thanks to the swift intervention of the police, the official was safely returned to Makurdi,” the Chairman said.

Tombowua further explained that the delay in announcing the results was due to the logistical challenges and distance involved in collating votes across the state.
