Rivers LG Election: PDP urges IG to provide security, ensure smooth exercise

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday, called on voters in Rivers State to cast their ballots in Saturday’s local government election, despite the Rivers State Police Command’s announcement that it would not participate, citing a Federal High Court ruling.

Tension escalated on Friday after police operatives stormed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), prompting Governor Siminalayi Fubara to reaffirm the election’s continuation as planned.

In response, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba demanded that police authorities provide security for the election, emphasizing Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s constitutional duty to ensure a secure environment.

“The IGP should note that he is duty-bound to provide an enabling and secure environment for the smooth conduct of the Rivers State Local Government Area election,” Ologunagba stated. “Duty calls on him to act professionally in the overall interest of our hard-earned democracy and the stability of our nation, Nigeria.”

Ologunagba maintained that Rivers residents are prepared for the election, and RSIEC has announced its readiness. He cited Section 84(15) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which prohibits courts from stopping elections pending suit determination.

“The PDP condemns the APC-controlled Police’s attempt to subvert the election against the people’s will, the Supreme Court’s pronouncement, and the Electoral Act,” Ologunagba said.

“The reported invasion of RSIEC facilities is a direct affront to democracy and the Rule of Law.”

The PDP urged Nigerians and the international community to hold the APC and the Inspector General of Police accountable for any potential breakdown in law and order.

“The people of Rivers State are peace-loving and law-abiding but will never allow anyone to stifle their will, especially in choosing local government leaders,” Ologunagba asserted.
