Utomi urges values revolution, says ‘character, not nepotism, key to Nigeria’s progress’

Professor Pat Utomi, a renowned expert in political economy, on Wednesday, emphasized the crucial role of leadership by character in transforming Nigeria’s fortunes.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Utomi stressed that the country’s progress hinges on the values and integrity of those in positions of authority.

“Ultimately, values shape human progress,” Utomi noted. “When we have values and people of character and commitment to service are in positions of public authority, our country will turn around.”

He also highlighted Nigeria’s abundant human capital, saying, “We have the ingredients, the human capital that it takes to show the way.”

However, Utomi lamented the decline of culture and values in Nigeria, attributing this to the collapse of institutions. “The biggest challenge we have is that culture is in collapse in Nigeria,” he said. “Institutions are critical for human progress… Our judiciary is a laughing stock – no country can make real progress without a judiciary that you can rely on.”

To address this, Utomi called for a “values revolution” and stronger institutions that uphold the rule of law. He also emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize competence over nepotism.

Utomi’s recommendations align with the World Bank’s recent report, “Turning the Corner,” which emphasizes the need for sustained reforms and complementary actions to drive Nigeria’s growth. By prioritizing character-driven leadership and institutional strengthening, Nigeria can unlock its potential for greatness.

As Utomi concluded, “We can do it, I am absolutely confident because I have seen it happen in human history.”

His words echo the optimism of experts like Shubham Chaudhuri, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, who believes that continued reform implementation can ensure Nigeria benefits from difficult adjustments underway.
