Kidney specialists have called for an increased awareness and action in tackling what they described as a critical shortage of organs for transplantation in Nigeria.
The experts stressed the need for a legal framework to guide organ donation and transplantation in the country.
Speaking at a Doctor’s On Radio programme on Classic FM on Wednesday, the physicians lamented that many diseases, despite advanced treatment, often lead to organ failure, making transplantation a necessary option.
The president of the Nephrology Association of Nigeria, Professor Olugbenga Awobusuyi stated that the shortage of organs available for transplantation was a significant challenge.
Awobusuyi emphasised the importance of organ donation, stating, “Organ donation provides a gift of life to those in need.”
He dispels common myths, such as the fear of reincarnation with missing parts, stressing that organ donation is a legal and lifesaving act.
The nephrologist stated that there was a need for increased awareness and education about organ donation in the country.
He maintained that many people were unaware of the benefits of organ donation and the strict criteria for certifying brain death.
On his part, a Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Theophilus Umeizudike, noted that in Nigeria, most kidney transplants come from living donors and usually from patients’ relatives.
This, the nephrologist argued, poses its own set of challenges, including the risk of high blood pressure and other health issues for the donor.
Umeizudike encouraged people to consider donation, noting that living donors undergo rigorous screening to ensure their safety and well-being.
The physician, however, said legislation is underway to ensure a smooth and equitable process.
He stressed the need for a coordinated effort to address the organ shortage crisis.
“We need to work together to establish a robust organ donation system in Nigeria,” he stated.
