With the school summer holidays in full swing, students and teachers both are enjoying a well-earned break from the classroom.

Whether you’re off on holiday, chilling out at home or doing something else entirely, the summer holiday is the longest one of the year, with a whole six weeks looming before the new academic year starts.

If part of your plans for this year’s break involve buying school uniform and making sure everything is ready for the autumn term, you’ll be wanting to know when school begins so you have everything in time.

When does the next school term start – and what are the dates for the next school year?

When does the new school term start?

Students will return to school in England and Wales in the week commencing Monday September 2.

This may vary by a day or two depending on your school – some may have an extra day’s holiday due to inset days, while some years may begin earlier than others if they have induction days – but the majority of schools will return that week.

You should check with your child’s school to confirm the exact date of the start of term, and whether all students are returning on the same day.

The calendar is a little different in Scotland, with the school holidays starting much earlier and school returning on Wednesday August 14.

Meanwhile in Northern Ireland the term begins around Monday September 2.

Half-term in England and Wales, meanwhile, is from Monday October 28-Friday November 1, while in Scotland it is from Monday October 14, with school resuming on Monday October 21.
