Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo has on Thursday night won the men’s 200m final at the ongoing Olympic Games.
Tebogo took down 100m champion Noah Lyles to finish first in the race, running a new African Record of 19.46s to win gold.
United State of America’s duo of Kenneth Bednarek and Lyles came in second and third at 19.62second and 19.70seconds respectively.
Tebogo not only became his country’s first ever gold medallist at the Olympics, he also emerged as the first ever African athlete to win a gold medal in the 200m.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s men and women’s 4x100m relay teams crashed out from the heats of their respective competitions.
The women’s 4x100m quartet comprising Justina Eyakpobeyan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Tima Godbless secured a Seasons Best (SB) of 42.70s but wasn’t enough, ultimately placing 6th in their heat with a time of 42.70s.
The men’s 4x100m quartet of Favour Ashe, Ajayi Kayinsola, Alaba Akintola and Usheoritse Itsekiri also ran an SB of 38.20s but finished 7th.
This is the first time Nigeria’s men’s and women’s 4x100m quartet will be competing at the Olympics together since the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
