Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been give a one-game international ban after chanting ‘Gibraltar is Spanish’ following his country’s Euro 2024 victory against England.
The midfielder, who came off at half-time during the 2-1 win against the Three Lions in Berlin in July, sung the chant during Spain’s celebrations after the victory.
Gibraltar, an overseas British territory since 1713, sits on the south coast of Spain’s mainland.
Uefa said Rodri’s chanting violated the “basic rules of decent conduct” and issued him with a one-game ban.
It means the midfielder and captain Alvaro Morata, who also sang the chant, will miss an away fixture against Serbia in September.
Rodri was named player of the tournament at Euro 2024.
The midfielder is one of the favourites for the 2024 Ballon d’Or award, alongside Real Madrid duo Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.
