Nigeria’s Favour Ofili has reached the final of the women’s 200m athletics final after failing to participate in the 100m event due to administrative issues.
Ofili becomes the first Nigerian woman to qualify for the final of the 200m event at the Olympics in 28 years since Mary Onyali did in 1996.
Ofili ran 22.05 seconds to finish third fastest overall behind Gabby Thomas and 100m winner, Julien Alfred in the semifinal races.

This feat is especially commendable for Ofili, who had suffered challenges in Paris following the non-appearance of her name on the list for the women’s 100m event for which she had qualified.
“Please remember, in the last Olympic Games I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC and NOC failed to release funds for athletes to be tested, which made 14 Nigerian athletes that qualified to not compete. Now THIS,” Ofili wrote in a series of rants on X.
“If those responsible are NOT held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organization can EVER be trusted in the future! Next one is the 200meters, I HOPE IM ENTERED.”
