A ‘major incident’ has been declared in Southport, Merseyside, after eight people have been taken to hospital following a stabbing rampage.

Emergency services are responding to the incident in Hart Street, Southport, and were called at 12pm today, as a ‘critical incident’ has been declared.

Eyewitnesses described seeing ‘a man stabbing young children’ and armed police have detained a man and seized a knife.

Photos of the road show police cars, fire engines, and people outside a pub and there are reports that residents have ‘locked doors and windows’.

A worker at the Bridge Café ion the road told Metro: ‘I’ve been told that a man went into a Yoga studio and stabbed a number of really young children.

‘I’ve got no idea why anyone would do this, or why someone would do this.

‘I feel sick, there was a class on apparently and he just walked in with a knife.

‘You hear about these things happening in America but you just never ever think that something like this would happen in this country.’
