A home has been destroyed in a suspected gas explosion in Middlesbrough which neighbours have compared to a ‘plane crashing’.
A person who was in the home has been severely burned in the explosion and flown to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
The North East Ambulance Service said they sent a duty officer, a clinical team leader, two emergency ambulance crews, a rapid response paramedic, a doctor, four Hazardous Area Response Teams and an air ambulance to the scene.
Fire crews are on the scene and urging locals to avoid the area around Overdale Road as a cordon has been put in place.
Cleveland Fire Brigade said in a statement: ‘We are currently (18/06/2024 @12:42) dealing with an incident on Kirkland Walk in Middlesbrough. Please avoid the area if you can.’

The entire façade of the home is blown off.
Witness Sean Joseph posted on Facebook: ‘Absolute carnage, gas explosion.
‘I work from home and just heard a huge explosion. I actually thought it was a plane crashing.’
The Great North Air Ambulance Service is understood to have attended the scene but it’s unknown if they treated anyone.
There was a fire after the explosion, neighbours told Teesside Live, with photos showing firefighters attempting to douse the flames.
