The Hadejia Local Government Council in Jigawa State has announced a ban on all unauthorised motor parks in the area as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.
This decision was contained in a statement signed by the council’s information officer, Muhammad Talaki, on Monday.
According to the statement, the ban follows a resolution reached during a meeting of the Hadejia Traffic Decongestion Committee, held last Wednesday in Hadejia.
“The Hadejia Local Government Traffic Decongestion Committee has banned picking, dropping off, and loading of passengers outside the approved motor parks in the area,” the statement reads.
The statement added that the ban, which affects taxis and mini-buses, requires all vehicles to pick and drop passengers only at government-designated bus stops within the council area.
Alhaji Sani Barde, the Chairman of the Traffic Decongestion Committee and Zonal Vehicle Inspector, also emphasised the need for strict adherence to the new regulations.
In addition to the motor park ban, the committee has imposed new penalties for dangerous driving.
“Any motorist caught driving recklessly, particularly during wedding activities, will face prosecution,” the statement added.
It also warned that drivers found engaging in illegal activities such as loading passengers on the driver’s side or on top of vehicles would be prosecuted.
The committee further resolved that drivers involved in underage driving, speeding, or taking dangerous drugs will face legal consequences.
“Temporary stall permits along major roads have also been revoked, and the owners are advised to renew their permits with the council.
“These steps are essential to reducing road crashes and traffic congestion, ultimately safeguarding the lives and property of our citizens.”
