A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe has thrown his weight behind the impeachment of the former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, describing it as a long-overdue decision.
Members of the Assembly on Monday impeached the 52-year-old over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of official.
They have since appointed the member representing Apapa 1 State Constituency, Mojisola Meranda, as the new speaker of the House.
In a post on his Facebook page, Igbokwe wrote: “The deed is done in LAHA!!! Hon. Mudashiru Obasa impeached as Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly for gross misconduct and abuse of office. Hon Mojisola Meranda Ojora is the new Speaker.”
In a more detailed comment under his post, the former Managing Director of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) shed light on the deeper tensions between the former speaker and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to him, Obasa’s refusal to collaborate with the governor had been a recurring issue that strained their working relationship.

“He (Obasa) was on Governor Sanwo-Olu’s neck for years. Every attempt to persuade him to work with the Governor fell on deaf ears. Many interventions by GAC (Governor’s Advisory Council) members did not help matters,” he wrote.
Obasa, who has served as speaker since 2015, has long been a central figure in Lagos politics, known for his influence and authority within the Assembly.
However, his tenure has not been without controversy.
Allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of power have dogged his leadership, culminating in Monday’s impeachment.
The friction between Obasa and Sanwo-Olu had reportedly been a lingering issue, with sources claiming the former speaker often challenged the governor’s policies and decisions.
Igbokwe’s comments appear to corroborate these claims, hinting at longstanding discord that even the intervention of influential APC elders failed to resolve.
