Arsenal boost as Wolves’ transfer stance on Matheus Cunha is confirmed

Wolves are working to extend the contract of Arsenal transfer target Matheus Cunha.

The Brazil international has emerged as potential candidate to breathe new life into the Gunners’ attack with Mikel Arteta keen to bolster his forward line in light of Bukayo Saka’s injury setback.

Cunha has been in outstanding form this season despite his side struggling to keep above the Premier League relegation zone.

The recent appointment of Vitor Pereira has coincided with an upturn in results and Wolves are now hopeful of persuading the former Atletico Madrid star to commit his future to the club.

Cunha currently has two-and-a-half years to run on his current deal but talks are underway over an extension.

According to Mail Sport any new contract could include a release clause and sources are ‘not completely ruling out’ a possible move in the January transfer window.

‘I hope he stays with us for a long time but I understand that as a special player he will have opportunities for sure in his career,’ said Pereira about Cunha’s future following last week’s 2-2 draw at Tottenham.

‘It is not only about his technique, but his personality. He is special because he can take the ball in a moment of pressure and make magic from nothing.’

The return to form of Gabriel Jesus has slightly eased the pressure on Arteta to spend this month and the Arsenal boss insists it is too straightforward to assume the addition of a new forward could make the difference between winning the league and missing out for a third season in a row.

‘I don’t know, it can be a perception, it can be a reality,’ said Arteta, speaking ahead of Saturday’s game at Brighton.

‘Signing someone is not enough, that’s for sure because that signing then has to score how many goals?

‘A lot of things have to happen. Sign and then I score 20 goals from here until the end and then you have a better chance?

‘Maybe, yes. I don’t know! But I’m very happy with the players that we have. If you look at the amount of goals that we score as well, it’s more than enough to win a Premier League, and our other numbers as well.

‘But the reality is if somebody doing more, that’s life so we have to be better.’
